Walking On Water

I decided to write my blog about the poem Walking On Water. I really liked the images that Dickey used to describe the beach: "I stepped from the clam-shell beach, breaking in nearly down through the sun where it lay on the sea." This was a really powerful image for me, because being from Long Island I am surrounded by beaches and I could actually get a vision of this beach in my head. I'm not really into poetry, so analyzing poems is something I was never good at. I was getting the idea that it had religious undertones, with the walking on water image. Also the line, "Leaving behind me no footprint, but only the shimmering place of an infinite step upon water." That made me think of Jesus, or some all knowing, all seeing, all powerful deity.

I also feel that this poem may have a religious basis behind it. The lines “A curious pilgrim hiking between two open blue worlds” was the line that immediately made me believe this. I though that possibly Jesus was the pilgrim, walking between earth and heaven. I may be reading too far into what is being said, but its poetry which leaves me trying to analyze further than what the phrases and individual words mean. Another thing I found interesting about this poem was that twice he referred to a boy with a staff. I wasn’t able to understand what this portion of the poem stood for, but I’m sure that it relates to a journey.

I see your point about the religious persective in the poem. I kind of got the same feeling by the imagery that i got from reading the poem. I liked the poem except i'm not good at really figuring poems out. I really just enjoyed the imagery and i liked the different use of language.
